At National Nannies we know the demand for quality childcare is constant across the U.S.  We know that both by the number of inquiries we get from families as well as by paying close attention to childcare statistics published by various governmental agencies and news sources.  In order to help parents and nannies better understand the demand for nannies and childcare in their area, we put together a thorough summary of important childcare statistics by State.

Alabama

  • Childcare Needs – The number of two-parent households in Alabama with both adults in the labor force is 121,889. Single-parent households in which the parent works is 99,319; total number of Alabama children under the age of six in need of childcare due to working parents is 221,208.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual fees paid for full time center care for an Alabama infant is $5,356. Average fees for a four-year-old are $5,668. Home-based care for an infant typically costs $4,628; the cost of home-based care for a four-year-old is $4,758.
  • Childcare Availability – Alabama is home to 1,947 childcare centers, 98 of which are nationally accredited. There are approximately 9,270 childcare workers in the state.

Alaska

  • Childcare Needs – 20,747 households in Alaska are two-parent homes in which both adults work. There are 14,635 single-parent households in which the parent is part of the labor force; the number of children under the age of six in need of childcare services is approximately 35,382.
  • Childcare Costs – Alaskan families pay an average of $9,450 annually for center-based infant care. Yearly fees for center-based care for a four-year-old are $7,646 on average. Parents of infants in home-based care programs pay average annual fees of $7,520, while average home-based care fees for a four-year-old are $6,270 per year.
  • Childcare Availability –  There are 218 childcare centers in Alaska; 11 of those 218 are nationally accredited. There are 1,130 childcare workers statewide.

Arizona

  • Childcare Needs – 179, 308 of Arizona two-parent households require full-time childcare due to both parents working. There are 147,786 working single parents in the state, bringing the total of children under six in need of childcare to 325,094.
  • Childcare Costs –  Average center-based care fees for an infant in Arizona are $9,230; center based care for a preschool-aged child is, on average, $7,360. Average family care or home-based care fees are $6,568 for an infant and $6,198 for a preschool aged child.
  • Childcare Availability –  There are approximately 1,820 daycare centers in Arizona, 131 of which are nationally accredited; 8,020 childcare workers reside in Arizona.

Arkansas

  • Childcare Needs –  The number of two-parent households with both adults in the Arkansas labor force is 82,558. There are an estimated 61,594 working single parents in the state; approximately 144,150 children under the age of six are in need of childcare.
  • Childcare Costs –  Center-based infant care fees in Arkansas are averaged at $5,400; center-based care for a preschooler is approximately $4,656. Average home-based care fees for infants and preschoolers are $4,500 and $4,100, respectively.
  • Childcare Availability –  The 5,880 childcare workers in Arkansas make up the staff of approximately 2,481 daycare centers and 1,173 family childcare homes across the state.

California

  • Childcare Needs – 1,078,778 of California’s two-parent households are homes in which both parents are a part of the labor force. 679,101 of the single parents in the state work outside of the home; the number of children under the age of six in need of childcare in California is 1,757, 879.
  • Childcare Costs –  Infant care in a daycare center averages $11,276 in fees annually. Care for preschool-aged children in California costs, on average, $7,856 per year. Family and home-based care for infants and preschoolers averages $6,854 and $6,956, respectively.
  •  Childcare Availability – Of the 10,850 daycare centers in California, 516 are nationally accredited. There are approximately 58,310 of childcare workers across the state.

Colorado

  • Childcare Needs – 163,303 of Colorado’s two-parent households need full-time childcare, as both parents work outside of the home. 83,450 of the state’s single parents are a part of the labor force; there are 246,753 children under the age of six in need of care.
  • Childcare Costs – Center-based infant care fees average $12,376 per year; fees for a preschool-aged child are approximately $8,996. The average annual cost of home-based care for an infant is $8,424 and $7,748 for a preschooler.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 2,849 daycare centers in Colorado, 81 are nationally accredited. There are approximately 9,840 childcare workers in the state.

Connecticut

  • Childcare Needs – Of the two-parent households in Connecticut, 105,516 families have two parents working outside of the home. 55,497 of Connecticut’s single parents are in the labor force, with 161,013 children under the age of six requiring full-time care.
  • Childcare Costs – Full-time center-based care for a Connecticut infant costs $12,667 annually, on average. Center-based care for a preschool-aged child averages $10,347 per year; home-based or family care average annual fees are $9,417 for an infant and $8,964 for a four-year-old.
  • Childcare Availability – 532 of Connecticut’s 2,152 daycare centers are nationally accredited, and 7,710 members of the state’s workforce are employed within the childcare industry.

Delaware

  • Childcare Needs – 25,161 children living in two-parent households have both parents in the workforce. 19,321 of the state’s children in a single parent household are in need of childcare, due to that parent working outside of the home. The total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare is 44,348.
  • Childcare Costs – Center-based infant care costs in Delaware average $9,562 per year, while fees for a preschool-aged child in daycare average $7,280. Home or family-based care in Delaware costs an average of $6,968 for infant care and $6,136 for four-year-olds.
  • Childcare Availability – Delaware has 449 operating daycare centers, 26 of which are nationally accredited. 1,420 of Delaware’s workers are employed in the childcare industry.

Florida

  • Childcare Needs – The number of Florida children in two-parent homes requiring full-time care due to both parents working outside the home is 469, 150. 366,606 children of single parents are in need of care due to that parent working, bringing the total of children under the age of six that require full-time care to 835,756.
  • Childcare Costs – Florida families pay an average of $7,965 annually for center-based care per infant, and $6,332 for preschool-aged center-based care. The average fees for home or family-based care are $7,129 for an infant and $6,057 for a four-year-old child.
  • Childcare Availability – 2,692 of Florida’s 9,397 childcare centers are nationally accredited, with 34,710 members of the state’s workforce employed within the childcare industry.

Georgia

  • Childcare Needs – 291,797 of the children in two-parent Georgia households require care services as a result of both parents working outside of the home. 223,967 children of single parents are in need of care, as that parent is part of the labor force. There are 515,764 children in the state of Georgia whose parent(s) work outside of the home, and need full-time care.
  • Childcare Costs – Infant-care annual costs in Georgia are, on average, $7,176 per infant for center-based care, and $5,408 for family or home-based care. Yearly fees for preschool-aged children in daycare centers and home-based care are $6,084 and $4,992, respectively.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 2,339 daycare centers in Georgia, 151 are nationally accredited. 16,530 of the state’s workers are employed within the childcare industry.

Hawaii

  • Childcare Needs – 38,741 of Hawaiian children in two-parent households are in need of care, due to both parents being employed outside of the home. 22,906 of the state’s children in a single-parent household require care services, due to that parent being part of the labor force. The total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare in Hawaii is 61, 647.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual infant-care costs in Hawaii are $12,583 for center-based care and $7,334 for family or home-based care. Fees for a preschooler in Hawaii average $7,284 annually for center-based care and $7,304 for home or family-based care.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 603 daycare centers in Hawaii, 132 of which are nationally accredited. 2,040 of Hawaiians work in the childcare field.

Idaho

  • Childcare Needs – Of the Idaho children living in two-parent households, 53,108 of them are in need of full-time childcare due to both parents working outside of the home. 24,014 Idaho children of single-parents require care because that parent is part of the labor force; the total number of children under the age of six in Idaho in need of full-time care is 77,122.
  • Childcare Costs – Annual center-based care averages $6,203 for an infant and $5,399 for a four-year-old child. Family or home-based care fees average $5,421 for an infant and $5,071 for a preschooler per year.
  • Childcare Availability – 18 of Idaho’s 488 daycare centers are nationally accredited, and 3,120 of the state’s workforce is employed within the childcare industry.

Illinois

  • Childcare Needs – 397,644 of Illinois children in two-parent households require full-time childcare, as both parents in these households work outside of the home. 245,911 children of single parents within the state are in need of care due to that parent being employed outside of the home; the total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time care is 643,555.
  • Childcare Costs – Annual infant care fees in Illinois average $11,809 for center-based care and $7,310 for family or home-based services. Yearly costs for preschool-aged children are, on average, $8,715 for daycare centers and $6,596 for home or family care.
  • Childcare Availability – 463 of the 5,542 daycare centers in Illinois are nationally accredited; there are approximately 15,580 childcare workers and industry providers within the state.

Indiana

  • Childcare Needs – 195,293 of Indiana’s children living in a two-parent household require full-time care due to both parents being employed outside of the home. Of the Indiana children living in a single-parent household, 131,960 reside in a home where that parent works full-time. The total number of children under the age of six in the state of Indiana that require full-time childcare is 327,253.
  • Childcare Costs – Annual average fees for center-based childcare in Indiana are $9,191 for an infant and $6,981 for a preschooler. The average cost of home-based or family care is $5,882 for infants and $4,953 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability – 153 of Indiana’s 629 daycare centers are nationally accredited; there are approximately 11.930 childcare professionals living and working in the state.

Iowa 

  • Childcare Needs – The number of children residing in a two-parent Iowa household in need of childcare due to both parents working outside of the home is 113,935. There are 50,096 children residing in single-parent homes in which that parent is part of the labor force; the total number of Iowa children under the age of six requiring full-time care is 164,031.
  • Childcare Costs – Annual childcare fees in Iowa for center-based care average $8,588 for an infant and $7,320 for a preschool-aged child. Costs for family or home-based care within the state are, on average, $6,496 for infants and $6,226 for a four-year-old.
  • Childcare Availability – 153 of Iowa’s 2,069 daycare centers are nationally accredited; within the state, there are approximately 8,400 childcare professionals working in the industry.

Kansas

  • Childcare Needs – 96,611 of the Kansas children living in a two-parent household require full-time care, as both parents work outside of the home. The number of children residing in a single-parent home in which that parent is part of the labor force is 54,508. In total, there are 151,119 children under the age of six living in Kansas and in need of full-time childcare.
  • Childcare Costs – Kansas families pay an average of $9,973 annually for center-based infant care, and $7,123 for center-based preschool care. The average yearly fees for infants and preschoolers in a family or home-based care setting are $6,269 and $5,455, respectively.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 603 childcare centers in Kansas, with 39 of those being nationally accredited. 5,300 Kansans work within the childcare industry.

Kentucky

  • Childcare Needs – 120,003 of Kentucky’s children reside in a two-parent household in which both of those parents are a part of the labor force. The number of children in a single-parent household in need of care, due that parent being employed outside of the home is 77,930, bringing the total of Kentucky children in need of full-time childcare to 197,933.
  • Childcare Costs – Annual averages for center-based childcare fees in Kentucky are $6,500 for an infant, and $6,734 for preschoolers. Family or home-based care averages $6,240 annually for infants and $5,200 for four-year-olds.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 2,140 childcare centers within the state of Kentucky, 111 are nationally accredited. The number of Kentuckians working within the childcare industry is 10,600.

Louisiana

  • Childcare Needs – Of Louisiana’s children, 115,371 of those residing in a two-parent household require full-time care. 114,497 children in single-parent households are also in need of care, due to that parent working outside of the home. The total number of Louisiana children in need of full-time care is 229,868.
  • Childcare Costs – The average Louisiana family pays $5,912 for center-based infant care, and $4,422 for center-based preschooler care. The average annual fees for family or home-based care is $4,593 for infants and $4,333 for a preschool-aged child.
  • Childcare Availability – 27 of Louisiana’s 1,824 childcare centers are nationally accredited. Within the state, there are 7,130 workers currently employed in the childcare field.

Maine

  • Childcare Needs – 34,380 of children living in a two-parent household in Maine are in need of childcare, due to those parents being employed outside of the home. There are also 18,483 children in single-parent homes where that parent works; the total number of Maine children under the age of six requiring full-time care is 52,863.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual center-based childcare fees in Maine are $9,048 for infants and $7,644 for four-year-old children. The yearly costs for family or home-based care are, on average, $6,708 for infants and $6,411 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – Maine is home to 702 childcare centers, 71 of which have national accreditation. There are currently 2,690 childcare workers employed across the state.

Maryland

  • Childcare Needs – 182,752 of Maryland’s children live in a two-parent household in which both parents are employed outside the home, while 111,564 reside in single-parent homes in which that parent is a part of the workforce. The total number of children under the age of six and in need of childcare in Maryland is 294,316.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual fees for center-based infant care in Maryland are $12,388; center-based care for a four-year-old is $8,704. Family or home-based care fees average $8,835 for infant care and $7,428 for preschool-aged children per year.
  • Childcare Availability – 183 of Maryland’s 1,527 childcare centers are nationally accredited. There are approximately 6,830 childcare workers currently employed within the field.

Massachusetts

  • Childcare Needs – Of the Massachusetts children living in a two-parent household, 202,113 require care due to both parents working outside of the home. The number of children within a single-parent household in need of care is 91,543, bringing the total number of Massachusetts children under the age of six in need of full-time care to 293,656.
  • Childcare Costs – Massachusetts families pay, on average, $18,773 for center-based infant care and $13,158 for preschool care. The annual average cost for family or home-based care within the state is $11,940 for infants and $11,475 for four-year-old children.
  • Childcare Availability – 928 of the 3,195 childcare centers are nationally accredited. There are currently 13,400 childcare workers employed within the industry across Massachusetts.

Michigan

  • Childcare Needs – 288,040 Michigan children live in two-parent households in which both parents work outside of the home. Additionally, there are 180,914 children of single working parents, bringing the total number of Michigan children in need of full-time childcare services to 468,954.
  • Childcare Costs – Center-based childcare for infants and preschoolers in Michigan annually average $8,892 and $7,332, respectively. For family and home-based care, those figures are $6,448 for infants and $6,236 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability – Michigan houses 4,533 childcare centers, 148 of which have received national accreditation. There are 20,410 childcare workers within the industry.

Minnesota

  • Childcare Needs – 204,828 Minnesota children live in two-parent households in which both parents are employed outside the home. 86,381 of Minnesota children reside in a single-parent household, with that parent working. The total number of Minnesota children under the age of six in need of childcare services is 291,209
  • Childcare Costs – Infant care fees in Minnesota are, on average, $12,893 annually for center-based care and $7,365 for family or home-based care. Costs of childcare services for preschoolers averages $9,885 for center-based care and $6,616 for family or home-based care.
  • Childcare Availability – 250 of Minnesota’s 2,058 childcare centers are nationally accredited. There are currently 6,530 Minnesota workers employed within the childcare industry.

Mississippi

  • Childcare Needs – 75,421 children in Mississippi reside in two-parent households in which both parents work outside of the home. 85,253 of Mississippi’s children in single-parent households are in need of care, as that parent is part of the workforce. The total number of children under the age of six in need of childcare services is 160,674.
  • Childcare Costs – The average annual cost of center-based childcare for Mississippi children is $4,620 for infant care and $3,780 for preschool-aged children. Family or home-based annual fees average $4,260 for infants and $4,188 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – Mississippi currently has 1,807 childcare centers, 21 of which are nationally accredited. There are 5,710 workers currently employed within the childcare industry.

Missouri

  • Childcare Needs – 183,297 of Missouri’s children residing in two-parent households are in need of childcare services, due to both parents being employed outside of the home. 120,424 children live in single-parent homes in which that parent is part of the work force; the total number of Missouri children under the age of six currently in need of childcare services is 303,721.
  • Childcare Costs – Center-based care costs for Missouri infants averages $8,528 per year; annual fees for preschoolers in care centers is $5,928. For family or home based care, the annual average costs for infants and preschoolers are $5,512 and $4,784, respectively.
  • Childcare Availability – 451 of Missouri’s 2,329 childcare centers are nationally accredited. There are currently 12,150 workers employed within the childcare industry.

Montana

  • Childcare Needs – 28,340 Montana children live in two-parent households in which both adults work outside of the home; 12,869 children have single parents who are part of the labor force. As a result, there are 43,209 Montana children in need of full-time childcare services.
  • Childcare Costs – The average annual costs of infant care services in Montana, both center-based and family or home-based, are $8,580 and $7,020, respectively. Center-based care for a preschool-aged child averages $7,280 per year; family or home-based childcare services $6,630.
  • Childcare Availability – The state of Montana is home to 317 childcare centers, 46 of which have received national accreditation. There are currently 2,240 childcare workers within the industry.

Nebraska

  • Childcare Needs – There are currently 74,480 children living in two-parent households in which both parents are employed outside of the home. 33,529 Nebraska children reside in a single-parent home with that parent part of the workforce. In total, there are 108,009 children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services.
  • Childcare Costs – The average cost of center-based childcare in Nebraska is $7,930 for infants and $6,834 for preschool-aged children annually. Family or home based-care annual averages are $6,287 for infants and $5,661 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 887 childcare centers in Nebraska, 55 are nationally accredited. There are currently 5,060 childcare workers employed in the industry across the state.

Nevada

  • Childcare Needs – Nevada is home to 76,972 children that reside in a two-parent household in which both adults work; 56,477 Nevada children live with single working parents. The total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services in Nevada is 133,449
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual center-based childcare costs are $9,397 for infants and $7,626 for preschoolers. Family or home-based care fees are, on average, $8,024 for infants and $7,514 for preschool-aged children per year.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 428 childcare centers in Nevada, 41 are nationally accredited. There are currently 1,740 childcare workers employed within the industry.

New Hampshire

  • Childcare Needs – 41,783 New Hampshire children reside in two-parent households in which both parents are employed outside of the home. 12,858 live with single, working parents; the total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services is 57,641.
  • Childcare Costs – Center-based care fees in New Hampshire annually average $10,920 for infant care and $8,736 for preschool-aged children. Family or home-based care averages are $8,216 for infants and $7,488 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – 60 of New Hampshire’s 870 childcare centers are nationally accredited. There are currently 2,630 childcare workers employed within the New Hampshire industry.

New Jersey 

  • Childcare Needs – New Jersey is home to 265,896 children residing in two-parent households in which both adults work outside the home. 136,825 children live with single, working parents. The total number of children under the age of six in New Jersey in need of full-time childcare is 402,721.
  • Childcare Costs – The average annual cost of center-based childcare in New Jersey is $11,193 for infants and $9,235 for preschoolers. Family or home-based care fees average $8,219 for infants, and $7,058 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 3,912 childcare centers in the state of New Jersey, 282 of which are nationally accredited. There are currently 23,890 childcare workers employed within the industry.

New Mexico

  • Childcare Needs – New Mexico is home to 48,823 children living in two-parent households in which both parents work. There are also 50,188 children of single working parents; the total number of New Mexico children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare is 99,011.
  • Childcare Costs – The average cost of center-based childcare in New Mexico per year is $7,300 for infants and $6,600 for preschoolers. The annual average fees for family or home-based childcare are $6,150 for infants and $5,600 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 737 childcare centers in New Mexico, 149 of which are nationally accredited. There are currently 3,650 childcare workers within the New Mexico industry.

New York

  • Childcare Needs – The state of New York is home to 501,151 children residing in two-parent households in which both parents work outside the home. There are also 334,576 children of single working parents; the total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare in New York is 835,727.
  • Childcare Costs – The average annual costs for center-based childcare in New York are $13,630 for infants and $10,541 for preschool-aged children. Fees for family and home-based care in New York average $10,187 annually for an infant and $9,474 for a preschooler.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 4,130 childcare centers in New York, 291 of which are nationally accredited. There are currently 67,570 childcare workers employed within the industry.

North Carolina

  • Childcare Needs – There are 269,618 children living in two-parent North Carolina households in which both parents work outside of the home. 193,202 children reside with single working parents; the total of children in North Carolina under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services is 462,820.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual costs for center-based childcare are $8.508 for infants and $7,260 for preschoolers. Family or home-based care annual average fees are $6,600 for infants and $5,760 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability –Of the 4,935 childcare centers in North Carolina, 139 are nationally accredited. There are currently 14,170 childcare workers employed within the industry across the state.

North Dakota

  • Childcare Needs – Of the North Dakota children residing in two-parent households. 24,439 have two parents that work outside of the home. There are also 9,417 children of single working parents within the state. The total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare in North Dakota is 33,856.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual costs for infant care in North Dakota are $7,512 for center-based services and $6,067 for family or home-based care. Average cost annually for preschool-aged childcare are $6,636 for center-based care and $5,757 for home or family care.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 139 childcare centers in North Dakota, 8 are nationally accredited. There are currently 2,710 childcare workers employed within the industry.

Ohio

  • Childcare Needs – Ohio is home to 339,449 children residing in two-parent households in which both parents work; 229,813 children have single working parents that are employed outside of the home. There are a total of 569,262 children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare in the state of Ohio.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual fees for center-based Ohio childcare are $7,761 for infants ad $5,905 for preschool-aged children. Costs for family or home-based care are, on average, $6,499 per year for infants and $5,807 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 5,804 childcare centers in the state of Ohio, 273 of which have received national accreditation. Currently, there are 22,130 childcare workers employed within the Ohio industry.

Oklahoma

  • Childcare Needs – There are 100,560 Oklahoma children residing in two-parent households in which both parents work; 77,460 children live with single parents employed outside of the home. The total number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare is 178,020.
  • Childcare Costs – The average cost for center-based childcare per year in Oklahoma is $7,119 for infants and $5,210 for preschool-aged children. Family or home-based care fees are, on average, $5,762 for infants and $4,968 for preschoolers.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 1,759 childcare centers in Oklahoma, 160 are nationally accredited. There are currently 7,990 childcare workers employed within the industry.

Oregon

  • Childcare Needs – There are 106,892 children residing in two-parent Oregon households in which both parents work; 58,983 children live with single parents employed outside of the home. The total number of Oregon children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services is 165,875.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual costs for center-based childcare in Oregon are $10,740 for infants and $8,280 for preschoolers. The fees for family or home-based care are, on average, $6,000 annually for infants and $5,400 for preschool-aged children.
  • Childcare Availability – There are 1,507 childcare centers in Oregon, 30 of which are nationally accredited. There are currently 5,160 childcare workers employed within the industry.

Pennsylvania

  • Childcare Needs – 338,248 children in Pennsylvania live in two-parent households in which both parents work. 207,729 children live with single parents who are employed outside of the home; there are currently 545,977 children under the age of six in Pennsylvania in need of full-time childcare.
  • Childcare Costs – Average annual costs for center-based care in Pennsylvania are $11,275 for infants and $7,000 for four-year-old children. The figures for family or home-based care are, on average, $8,050 per year for infants and $5,700 for children of preschool age.
  • Childcare Availability – Of the 5,415 childcare centers in Pennsylvania, 288 are nationally accredited. There are currently 31,570 workers employed within the Pennsylvania childcare industry.

Rhode Island

  • Childcare Needs – 30,073 children in Rhode Island reside in two-parent households in which both parents work. 18,989 children live with single parents that are employed outside of the home. The current number of children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare services in Rhode Island is 49,062.
  • Childcare Costs – The average annual costs for center-based childcare services in Rhode Island are $11,388 for infants and $9,100 for preschool-aged children. Family or home-based care fees average $8,684 for infants and $8,320 for preschoolers per year.
  • Childcare Availability – Rhode Island is home to 429 childcare centers, 30 of which are nationally accredited. There are currently 4,140 workers employed within the Rhode Island childcare industry.

South Carolina

  • Childcare Needs – 118,645 children in South Carolina reside in two-parent households in which both parents work. 103,998 children live with single parents that are employed outside of the home. The total number of South Carolina children under the age of six in need of full-time childcare is 333,643.
